translation in situation comedy

Nowadays, many Chinese audience watch american situation comedy. in fact, some audience don't know english, even a few of audiences never learn english before. they just watch subtitle and body languages. So that translation is very important in situation comedy.

more and more professors focus on translation in humor, but there is no breakthrough. Attardo said“the existing approaches to humor translation incorporate a theory
of translation and apply it to humor.

Salvatore Attardo is a full professor at Texas A&M University–Commerce and the editor-in-chief of Humor, the journal for the International Society of Humor Research.[2] He studied at Purdue University under Victor Raskin and extended Raskin's script-based semantic theory of humor (SSTH) into the general theory of verbal humor (GTVH). He publishes in the field of humor in literature and is considered to be one of the top authorities in the area.

General Theory of Verbal Humor is the most famous theory in human language, in this theory, Attardo state six issues in humor
script opposition
script opposition means a script is an organized complex of information about something

logical mechanism
logical mechanism is combine different logical

situation
situation is some ‘prop’ in humor, like character, even and so on

target
Target is the joke in humor

narrative strategy
Narrative strategy is some useful narrative skills

language
Language is the word in humor

Attardo think that Script opposition is most important issue in six issues, and every humor script need include it.

situation comedy analysis

Last week, I posted a questionnaire on the website, it is talk about Chinese situation comedy and American situation comedy. The object is Chinese audience. Now, there are twenty-three subjects give me answers. So today I want to analysis these data.

The first one question is compare Chinese situation and American situation comedy. 12 subjects choice Chinese situation comedy better, 11 subjects choice American situation comedy better. It means that in recent year, Chinese situation comedy is better than before, because ten years before, many Chinese audiences prefer to watch American situation comedy, rather than Chinese situation comedy.

The second question is the best section in Chinese situation comedy, and the options are a script, dialogue, character, narrative, plot. Eight subjects select dialogue and character. Because, in Chinese situation comedy, dialogue and character own Chinese characteristics, and Chinese audience understand those easily.

The third question is the worse section in Chinese situation comedy, and the options are a script, dialogue, character, narrative, plot. Eight subjects select plot. Because, in traditional Chinese situation comedy, there is the single plot, normally talks about family, friends, love. It is easy to understand the script, but sometimes audience feels a little boring.

The fourth question is the best section in American situation comedy; Seven subjects select plot. Because, in the American situation comedy,  the plot is diversification. For example, Modern Family, some plots are talk about family, some plots are talk about friends, some plots are speak of love.

The fifth question is the worse section in American situation comedy. Ten objects select narrative. Because normally Chinese situation comedy is Single-line narrative and narrative structure of each set is similar. Chinese audiences like single-line narrative, because every set is a Full story it include beginning developingclimax and ending. In another aspect, American situation like using Multi-line narrative. There are many story line in one set. So it makes a little difficult to understand the story.

First season of "Ipartment" the average number of conversation lines per episode is 186

The first 24 episodes of “I Love My Family”, the average number of conversation lines per episode is 153

The  multiple dimensions:    26%  for "Friends  14% for " Ipartment" and 10% for "I Love my Family"

The physical dimension: 13% for “Friends” 15% for "Ipartment" and  10% for “I Love My Family”.

According to bar chat, we can find there are some different for the temporal dimension between Ipartment and I love my family. The temporal dimension on Ipartment is more than that in I love my family. Because the script of ipartment is similar that of the american situation, and director hope the foreign audience can understand the story when they watch ipartment.

Interactive Film and Cinema

What do you understand by the above title?

Interactive cinema is a hybrid between participation and viewing, giving the player - or viewer, as it were - a strong amount of control in the characters' decisions. (wikipedia)

In my views, interactive film means that audience to product film, audience join in all of film processing like script, character, pro, shooting skill and so on. this kind of film has publish for some years, now, the interactive skills is better than before.

What is the new experience that is available to the audience?

traditional filmit is created by some directors, they decide the script, storyline, characters, pro and so on, audience just buy ticket and watch film.

interactive filmaudience not just buy ticket and watch film. they can play director to change film. for example, some audiences like humor, however, the film is sad, so they can say stop and change the storyline. it is a great way to show audience's emotion.

What examples of practice can you find of the above?

Last Call

character use phone to interact with audience, question them like go up or go down. nobody know what is the end.
for audience, they can change the film so they don;t feel boring.

What can we expect in future?

when audience want to watch film, they don't need go to cinema, they can watch film at home, different audience can produce different film.

Do you think, from your research, it will become important or stay a ‘niche’ experience?

i think interactive film will be better in the future, and more and more audience join it.

The fundamental context categories in understanding communicative intention

Humor context is separated into 3 dimensions: physical, temporal and experiential.

The physical dimension of context encompasses the categories Access, Space, and Move

The temporal dimension describe factors which are affected by the sequence in time of the occurrence of the associated events

The experiential dimension :the most complex of all contextual dimensions
Encompasses all factors related to the intangible memory of the mind

These factors include but are not limited to social setting, culture, personality, world view, knowledge, discourse, status, etc.
